2 for the +adj 和 as 的问题

1、On first hearing, this was the socially concerned chancellor, trying to change lives for the better, complete with reforms to an obviously indulgent system.

问题1:请教曹老师，trying 现在分词为定语还是伴随状语呢？另外，for the 为啥后面只跟了better和complete这两个形容词而没有名词呢？我感觉从语义上来说，应该是for the better , complete lives因为和for前lives重复，所以省略了。

2、In this as in much else, those who wish to influence the future must prepare for it.

问题2:请教曹老师，In this as in much else这个结构怎么分析呢？为啥as后面接了一个介词短语呢？是因为In much else和in this本来是两个句子，但因为主句相同，而通过一个比较结构融合成了一个句子么？
