2 关于过去分词单独使用的疑问

老师，我在赵俊英的《现代英语语法》中看到这么一个例句：

【The children, exhausted, fell asleep at once. 孩子们由于过度疲劳立即就入睡了。】

书上说这里的exhausted是过去分词作原因状语的用法。

请问过去分词作原因状语时，可以单独一个词存在的吗？以往我见到的都是好几个单词组成的原因状语从句，从来没见过一个单词组成的原因状语。

还有，这里的exhausted如果放在句首可以吗，变成这样：

Exhausted, the children fell asleep at once.

这里的exhausted 我一般看作形容词，因为起形容词的作用，用于描述the children的状态，很多词典也都有形容词的释义。此句中看作一种补充修饰语，有的人可能解释为状语，有的解释为主语补足语。根据语境，可以放在句首，也有可以在修饰的名词的后面，或句尾。以你的例句为例：

The children, exhausted, fell asleep at once. 这里exhausted显然是修饰 the children的，相当于the children, who were exhausted, 解释为原因状语，是根据句子的语义分析的。此句中，如果将exhausted放句首也是可以的：Exhausted, the children fell asleep at once.

但是你的句子不能将exhausted 放句尾，The children fell asleep at once exhausted. (英语不这样用，因为有at once)。去掉at once就可以了, 即The children fell asleep exhausted.

我觉得这里exhausted 是过去分词而不是形容词，因为单独一个形容词作定语（不管是前置还是后置），都不能用逗号与其它内容隔开。

这里exhausted 是过去分词，作原因状语。作原因状语的过去分词的动作与句中的主语在逻辑上（即语义上）存在动宾关系。The children, exhausted, fell asleep at once. = The children fell asleep at once because they were exhausted. = Because they were exhausted, the children fell asleep at once.

【2】Exhausted ,the children, fell asleep at once.

=Because they were exhausted , the children fell asleep at once.
