In World War , Japan hoped ________ its power to the whole Asia, and it did not succeed.

A. extend  B. extending  C. to extend  D. to have extended

常见的表达是这样(时间状语修饰不定式):Japan hoped to have extended its power to whole Asia in World War II,译为“日本本想在二战期间占领整个亚洲”。类比:I meant to have visited you yesterday.

In World War Ⅱ,Japan hoped to have extended its power to the whole Asiaand it did not succeed.

答:In World War II, Japan hoped to extend its power to the whole of Asia, but it did not succeed.

1.Japan hoped to have extended its power to the whole Asia in World War Ⅱ,and it did not succeed.

2.Japan hoped to extend its power to the whole Asia in World War Ⅱ,and it did not succeed.

hoped to have done暗含原本希望而实际未实现,后面用but转折,不用and

A Comprehensive Descriptive Grammar of English中这样提到:

We do not need to use the past perfect if unreality (nonactualisation) is clear from the context.

e.g. I hoped/intended/wanted to come, but I couldn’t.

但是如果希望基本实现了,当然就不能用hoped to have done了,只能用hoped to do,不是转折的意义当然就不用but,用and,比如:

3.Last year we hoped to have the contest taken up in sixty counties, and forty-seven countries responded.

我的看法是可能与had hoped to do几乎完全等于hoped to have done有关,

把had hoped to do换到第一句中,and改为but

4.Japan had hoped to extend its power to the whole Asia in World War Ⅱ,but it did not succeed.

陈用仪在“英语常用词疑难用法手册第二版”认为“I hoped to have been helped. I hoped to have been helped几乎完全等于I had hoped to be helped,这就是过去完成结构!

5.Last year, I had hoped to have my guidance counselor more involved in this natural extension to counseling services. However, she spent most of her time...

6.In February 1937 Squadron Leader R E ‘Dickie’ Bain took over command of the squadron and I wrote in a letter to Het that I played golf at Goodwood on Sunday 21st February with Caesar Hull and Johnny Walker. That year I had hoped to win selection to carry out the single aerobatic display at the annual Hendon Air Display, but I was...

7.The two countries last year had hoped to reach a broad agreement on liberalisation by the end of April 1994.1994319/20日的Financial Times

In World War II, Japan hoped to extend its power to the whole of Asia, but it did not succeed.

This time last year we hoped to have another child by now and that our family would be complete. This time last year修饰hoped, by now 修饰have another child)

Last year we hoped to be King and Queen.

In World War II, Japan hoped to extend its power to the whole of Asia, but it did not succeed. Japan hoped to have extended its power to whole Asia in World War II. 那么这个句子在一定语境,可以理解为这是二战前的想法, in WWII 修饰have extended its power

将原句to have extended 改为to extend, 更为常见,将and 改为but更为清楚。

Last year we hoped to have increases in investment of about 9 percent, but we fell short.

I submitted it for the Pulitzer Prize this year and hoped to win, but didn't.
