类似问题很早前就讨论过了。既然再度提出来我也说说。Quirk所说(1260页)确实不妥,同一本书在第367页:She's not the brilliant dancer ( that) she used to be.这就自相矛盾。在随后出版的“A Students Grammar of the English Language”一书中是这么说的:“When the verb in the relative clause is be, the complement pronoun must be that or zero (John is not the man he was).”
1.He is not the man which(or that) his father wants him to be.(Curme的English Grammar1953一书)
2.He's not the man which he was.(Usage-Abusage一书第365页)
3.He was not the man which the Jupiter had described him to be.(A Grammar of Late Modern English part 2 by Poutsma)
问题出在时过境迁而已。当代几乎不会出现上述的例子。
简单说就是:作表语的关系词在限制性关系从句中用that (省去更常见),在非限制性关系从句中用which。注意判断是限制性还是非限制性。至于用who则是一种比较特殊的情况,剑桥语法上举了一例,很特别的语境才有可能。
剑桥语法与Quirk所说确实是分歧的。只能参考别的书,绝大多数说法与剑桥语法基本一致。
