shore前面用不用定冠词the的区别

我注意到 shore 前面有时用定冠词 the，有时不用定冠词 the，它们的区别是什么？比如：

The man tried to swim to shore.

The man tried to swim to the shore.

shore 前面用不用定冠词与其具体用法有关。

若表示抽象意义的“岸”（即王老师说的泛指，通常与“水”相对），其前通常不用定冠词；若表示具体意义的“岸”（不强调与“水”的对比），则通常要用定冠词。比较：

Out at sea, the wind is often stronger and steadier than close to shore. 在海上，风往往比海岸附近更强更稳定。（可以有the，但最好不用）

The bottom of the garden sinks to the shore. 园子的尽头一直倾斜到岸边。（必须有the）

网友的两个句子都对，只说话人的侧重点有所不同（一个视shore为抽象的“岸”，另一个视shore为具体的“岸”）。

swim to shore 和 swim to the shore都可以用，无区别，似乎前者更常见。如：

They had to abandon the boat and swim back to shore . 他们不得不弃船游回岸边。 (《剑桥中阶英汉双解词典》p.924)

We swam to shore. 我们游向岸边。（《韦氏高阶英汉双解词典》p.1924）

She began to swim to shore. （《朗文当代高级英语辞典》第6版 shore 词条）
