突然陷入一个很奇怪的问题。为什么What is the matter可化成陈述语序What the matter is，而没有人说What wrong is？而且Can you tell me what the matter is？这句话对吗？谢谢大家了。

纠正你一个术语。语序分为倒装语序和自然语序（或正常语序）。用陈述语序是不准确的。例如：Only yesterday did I see him. 这是个陈述句，但却是倒装语序。

What happened？这是疑问句，但却是正常语序。

所以，陈述句可以是正常语序，也可以是倒装语序。疑问句可以是倒装语序，也可以是正常语序。语序指主语和谓语动词的相对位置而言，与陈述句还是疑问句没有必然的联系。所以尽量不要用所谓的陈述语序、疑问语序这种不准确的术语。

【答】对的。意思是：“你能告诉我那物质是什么吗？”

What is the matter？中的 the matter 的意思是“麻烦（事）”，相当于 wrong。

1.what is the matter相当于 what is wrong，都是“主+系+表”结构。wrong是形容词，matter是名词，在表示“问题；毛病”时，“定冠词+matter”被当作形容词使用，意义同wrong。例如：

There's nothing the matter with it. 这没有问题。《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》

▲因此，“What's wrong?”的意义也常用“What's the matter?”来表达。例如：

The owner of the shop came up to see what was the matter. 商店的老板过来看发生了什么事。（1984版《高中英语第一册》LESSON 11 AT A TAILOR'S SHOP）

2. 当然也有将the matter直接用作名词表示“毛病；麻烦事”的。例如：
