that 和the one 可以互换么

The population of China is much larger than that of Japan.

这个THAT 可以替换为 the one 么。如果不可以的话为什么？

同意黎老师的解答。这里的 population 是不可数名词，不能用the one替换。the one只能指可数名词，而that既可以指可数名词也可以指不可数名词，但that只指事物，具有特指性质。此外，that之后一定要跟修饰语。例如：

The weather here is hotter than that in Guangzhou. 这里的天气比广州的热。（that指不可数名词，不能用the one替换。）

The laboratory in my school is larger than that / the one in yours. 我们学校的实验室比你们学校的实验室大。（that指可数名词的单数，可以用the one替换。）

这个 that 不可以替换为 the one ，因为 that 可以替代“the + 可数名词或者不可数名词”, the one 只能替代“the + 可数名词单数 ”，这里的 population 是不可数名词。

要代替已说过的名词，只要清晰地记住下面3点，照搬照套，就不会用错，没那么多烦恼：

it = the（this，that，my，...）+ 名词 -----> it 和名词是同一个；

one = a + 名词 ------> one和名词不是同一个，只是同一类，是该类中的任意一个；

that = the + 名词 ----> that和名词不是同一个，只是同一类；
