不可以。as if 从句谓语用would do表示将要做某事的样子，用had done表示做了某事的样子。不会出现would have done这种形式，因为它不符合逻辑。He staggered towards the door as if he would fall/were to fall at any moment. His face was pale as if he had just seen a ghost.

《韦氏词典》有better的不及物用法的：intransitive verb: to become better… must be bettering instead of worsening.所以不能说这个句子错了。但很多词典没哟收录不及物用法，说明这种用法不常用。
