suggest后的that从句的谓语用过去式符合语法吗

Theories suggest that the development of the domestic sewing machine went some way to changing the roles of women in the home. As the sewing machine had dramatically reduced the time in which it took to produce an item of clothing.

suggest that+子句,应该用原形动词,因为动词前面省略 should 的缘故。上面这句话为何用过去式动词 went? 是不是书本的编辑错误?

当suggest 不表示“建议”,而是“说明,显示,暗示”之意时,其宾语从句则不用虚拟语气。

His gesture suggested that he didn’t agree with me. 他的姿势暗示出他不同意你的意见。

我们把suggest 的两个用法放在一个句子中,请比较并记住:

Her pale face suggested that she was seriously ill, and her parents suggested that she should go to see the doctor.

她苍白的脸色显示她病得很厉害,因此她父母建议她去看医生。(第一个suggested 是“显示”,第二个suggested 是“建议”)

insist 也有类似用法,当它表示“坚持一个事实”时,其宾语从句也不用should;当“强调一个主张”时,宾语从句才用should。例如:

The thief insisted that he had not stolen anything from the supermarket, but the manager insisted that he should be sent to the police station.

 小偷坚持说他没有从超市偷任何东西,但超市经理却坚决主张把他送到警察局。
