正误判断(涉及过去特定能力是否用could)

He ran after the bus, and could catch it.

此句，是否正确？如果错误，请问原因是什么？

一般会说：He ran after the bus, and was able to catch it.

前一句仅说明他能够追上（乘上），但没说结果如何；后一句意味着实际追上（乘上）了，能力实现了。个人观点，仅供参考。但前一种用法很少见，could用于过去时间最好用于一般能力。
