宾语从句的连接词问题

各位老师好！今天看到一句话：

Example has more followers than reason. We unconsciously imitate what pleases us, and approximate to the characters we most admire.

想请问这里为什么是imitate what pleases us呢？

虽然能理解作者不是想表达模仿能使我们愉悦的人，不应用who。但是怎么能模仿“东西”呢？作者想表示的意思是imitate those who do things that pleases us吗？

之前还看到另一句话是When you know the effects of different types of food, you can use your knowledge well and eat what you want to become.

两句话都能意会，但是想仔细分析就觉得无从下手，想请教一下各位老师，这是属于同一种用法吗？

我问你假设模仿他人的处世之道或行为，行不行呢？这不就可以用what吗？也可以用all that pleases us.

你的第二个句子和第一个不是相同的一种用法。。第二个是从You are what you eat(健康是吃出来的）这个习惯表达变化而来。eat what you want to become.的大概意思是“想要什么样的健康就去吃什么样的东西“。
如果你不知道You are what you eat的这个习惯表达，就不好理解第二句。说到底，学英语重要的在积累。见多了，就能悟出其中道理和含义。
