when引导的从句的省略

The brain is as active during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep - when most vivid dreams occur - as it is when fully awake.

请问awake在这里是形容词还是副词呢，在这里是属于when从句的还是as从句的？如果awake是属于when从句的，那么as it is后面不缺成分吗？

虽然awake作表语，通常是人做主语，但实际上brain也可以作主语，awake作表语。例如COCA语料库例句：Supposedly while you lucid dream half of your brain is in the sleep state and the other half of your brain is awake and aware of what is happening. When the brain is awake, it resembles a busy airport, ...。你的句子中，when fully awake=when it(the brain) is fully awake.

主句的比较项为as active，as it is为比较分句，表语是比较对应项，在比较分句是必须省略的。He is as tall as you are. 这种句子你没有见过吗？are的表语呢？一样的结构。
