关于定语从句的问题

在听定语从句的语法课，出现了2个小问题，请老师解惑：

1. The other reason why costs are so high is the restrictive guild-like ownership structure of the business.

一般看到的句子都是关系词作主宾表语或者时间状语、地点状语，但这里从句costs are so high在意思上很完整了，关系词到底在其中作什么成分呢？

2. Humans are aware of the world they live in.

这是讲到关系词作宾语可省略，但讲课中说如果不省略的话，关系词是which。为什么不是where呢？

还原一下，从句They live in world里，world是宾语？live in是谓语？还是live是谓语，in world是地点状语？
