是的，修饰reason的定语从句可以省略关系副词why。
见《新编高级英语语法》P.651：
在随常口语中，关系副词常常被省略，或者为that 所取代例如：
......
That's the reason ( ) he can't go, you see.
以及《现代英语语法》P.1308：
在限定性定语从句中，当先行词是表时间，地点，原因，方式等名词时，关系副词when,where,why,how可以省略。
