后接不可数名词时，谓语动词用单数；后接可数名词复数时，谓语动词可用单数或复数。惯用法专家葛传椝编著的《英语惯用法词典》（时代出版社）指出：(an) abundance of …用在可数名词前的时候，那名词当然是用复数形式（如 things，不作 thing），但那动词用单数或复数形式都可以。例如：(An) abundance of good things are (或is) kept there. 动词用复数形式的普通些。（见该书第15页）

另外，商务印书馆出版的《最新高级英汉词典》有例句：

An abundance of instances is cited. (=Abundance of instances are cited.) 列举子大量例证。

(an) abundance of 后接不可数名词作主语时，谓语动词用单数；(an) abundance of 后接可数名词（必须用复数）作主语时，谓语动词可以用单数或者复数。例如：

There was an abundance of food.

It is 40 percent more expensive than coal, and there is an abundance of alternative energy sources.

There was such an abundance of apples that year that many were left to rot under the trees.（以上摘自张道真主编《现代英语用法词典》修订版）
