当我们讲两物类似之处时，就用We compare one thing to another.（我们将一物比作另一物），即用compare to。例如：

Shakespeare compared the world to a stage.莎士比亚把世界比作舞台。

compare with意为“放在一起，比较异同之处”，通常强调不同之处。例如：The standard of living of the British working man is high compared with that of his counterpart in many other countries.与很多其他国家同类工人的生活标准相比，英国工人的生活标准是高的。

当compare用作不及物动词时，也用介词with。例如：

Nothing can compare with wool, for warmth.从保暖性来说，没有什么东西能跟羊毛相比。

  compare ... to ... 意思是“把 ......比作......”，相比时一般要有相似之处。如：Poets have compared sleep to death. 诗人把睡眠比作死亡。/ The men all started to compare her to Mona Lisa.男人都开始把她比作蒙娜丽莎。/ Burke compared the parks of London to the lungs of the human body. 柏克把伦敦的公园比作人体里的肺。

     compare sth.(或sb.) with ... 意思是“把 某物（或某人）与......比较”。例如：

If you compare her work with his, you'll find hers is much better. 如果你把她的工作

与他的比较，就会发现她的工作比他的好得多。

      compare with 可以用两个比较物之一作主语，和 can 连用时构成不及物动词的形式，表示甲物比得上或比不上乙物。可译为“和...... 相比”、“与...... 相匹敌”。例如： My English cannot compare with his. 我的英语不如他。 / Nothing can compare with wool for warmth. 没有比羊毛更暖和的东西了。

      现代英语中，compare 作“与......比较”解时，后面既可以用 with ，也可以用 to ；但作“把 ......比作......”解时，一般只能用 to 。例如： London is large, compared to ( 或 with) Paris. 与巴黎相比，伦敦是大的。/ It's a book that compares the human brain to   ( 或 with)  that of the elephant. 那是一本把人脑和象脑对比研究的书。
