请问what在“主+系+表结构”的从句中做主语的意义何在

例如：

Though my aunt pursued an enlightened policy she was extremely difficult to please.

Though my aunt pursued what was an enlightened policy she was extremely difficult to please.

有区别吗 ?

我跟Expert 的看法正好相反。

“单个的名词” ，其概念指事物本身的性质，具有客观性和完整性。

an enlightened policy （开明的政策）——这个政策没有额外附加条件，是名副其实的，客观的和完备的。

然而，what 名词性从句表达的概念，则是“打折扣的”。what was an enlightened policy （所谓的一种开明政策）—— 这种政策是自己标榜的，不是名副其实的，所以，执行起来未必开明。

类似表达，网友可以通过比较，仔细体会：

The old man lived in a woodern hut.（真正的小木屋）

The old lived in what was a woodern hut.（所谓的小木屋。不见得一定是。）

区别就是：第1句为名词短语an enlightened policy作动词pursued宾语，第2句为what引导名词性从句what was an enlightened policy作动词pursued宾语,在语气上what从句要强烈些。
