▲ 在现代英语中，我们发现，引导定语从句的关系副词，除了when，where，why 之外，还有一个所谓的“万能关系副词that”。它可以用于表示方式、时间、地点、原因的先行词后面，修饰先行词the way，the time，the day，the moment，the place，the reason 等。that 在定语从句中作状语，相当于in which，when、where、why，而且，一般可以省略。

网友说的“that 引导的定从不是只能做主语、表语、宾语么？” 你说的这是关系代词that，不是关系副词that —— 虽然同一个that，但不一样的作用！

① 表示方式时，关系副词that（= in which）用在way 之后，而且常省略。

在定语从句中用 that 替代 when 或者 where 的情况（以下内容摘自《牛津英语用法指南》第三版498.6节）：

在非正式文体中，表示时间的普通名词后面的 when 常常由 that 来替代或省略。

Come and see us any time (that) you're in town.你什么时候进城，就来看望我们吧。

I'll never forget the day (that) we met. 我永远不会忘记我们见面的那一天。

That was the year (that) I first went abroad. 那一年是我第一次出国。

somewhere, anywhere, everywhere, nowhere 和 place 后面的 where 也常常由 that 来代替或省略（但其他词不行）。

Have you got somewhere (that) I can lie down for an hour ? 你有没有什么地方可以让我躺下来休息一个小时？

We need a place (that) we can stay for a few days.我们需要一个可以暂住几天的地方。(但不能说： We need a house we can stay for a few days.)

在非正式文体中，way 后面的 in which 可以用 that 替代或省略。

that不是引导定语从句，这是强调句型，强调的是it和that之间的这部分，这部分做状语翻译为：一年半以来的第一次，我真真切切的见到了黑夜。
