now表示“现在”，与一般过去时连用，总觉得有点奇怪。比如下面这个句子：
Only now did he understand the full complexity of the problem. 直到现在他才明白这一问题的全部复杂性。
这个句子无论从英文还是从其翻译来看都有点怪。我的看法是：既然now连用了一般过去时，那么这个now就不宜翻译成“现在”，而应翻译成“当时”“那时”。比如：
Now he realized that it was too difficult for him to finish in so little time. 这个句子的意思应该是：这时他意识到了，这工作对他来说太难了，用这么少的时间无法完成。（注意句中的now翻译成了“这时”）
但是，对于Only now did he understand the full complexity of the problem. 来说，如果将now理解成“这时”“那时”，那什么不用then这样的词呢？比如说成：
Only then did he understand the full complexity of the problem.
