people who own a dog is increasing 和A lot of people who own a dog is increasing是错句。要用are.The number of people who own cars is increasing. 这个is指得是the number， 这个数量。The number of people who own cars are rich。 这里要用is.

customary 是“常见的”，“通常的”的意思。这是比较从句的用法，句子相当于：Many of the animals... had more body fat than (it) is customary for animals arriving from the wild (to have much body fat). 如果去掉is customary for 也可以，但意思就和原来不太一样了。
