像student numbers/ staff numbers 这类“名词修饰名词（number）”的用法中，number一般指的是有登记注册的、相对固定的“全员总数”，习惯上用numbers这一复数形式。又例如troop numbers, pupil numbers, population numbers等等。如果出现单数的student number或staff number，则会被理解为学生的学号或员工的工号、编号、序号等。

但更为普遍的用法是the number of...结构来表示数量，无论这个数量的值是一个不宜精准统计的变数（比如客流量）还是相对固化的定数（比如员工数量）都可以。这时候一般把单数的number作为总量。例如：to reduce the number of tests, the number of supporters has dropped, the number of graduates will increase, to decrease the number of workers,to reduce the number ofstaff等。
