问题1: 请教老师，这个explains后面为动名词复合结构，as heads of state这个介宾结构作什么成分呢？作continuing这个动名词的定语吗？

2. And so, the Middle East excepted , Europe is the most monarch-infested region in the world.

问题2: 这个the Middle East excepted是省略了being的独立主格结构吗？excepted是一个形容词。

3. Sadly, the spirit of inquiry once at home on campus has been replaced by the use of the humanities and social sciences as vehicles for publicizing"progressive" , or left-liberal propaganda.

问题3: 我感觉这个inquiry后面省略了being，因为once我感觉不能修饰介词at ，只能作动词的being的修饰语。所以推断后面省略了being。

1 这里没有动名词复合结构。continuing是现在分词作定语修饰popularity。as介词短语也是定语。2 是的。3 once at home on campus.视为一个整体作后置定语。
