3 关于unable的疑惑
老师，我在牛津词典查询unable时，看到这么两个句子：
1. He lay there, unable to move.
2. I tried to contact him but was unable to.
请问第一个句子的【unable to move】省略了主语和系动词【he is】和连接词【and】，这属于什么语法现象？
第二个句子的but后面也是省略了主语，怎么可以随便省略呢？

1. He lay there, unable to move. 这里的unable to move是形容词短语作状语，表示主语所处的状态。
2. I tried to contact him but was unable to.【说明】but 连接并列句时，如果两个分句的主语相同，可以省略后一个分句的主语，而不影响句意。如：He talked little but (he) did much . 他说的少，但做的多。（摘自赵俊英：《现代英语语法》p.1191）
