下面是我的问题：

单词geology的定义来自Random House Webster's Dictionary

geology /dʒiˈɑlədʒi/ n., pl. -gies.

the science that deals with the physical history of the earth, the rocks of which it is made up, and the physical, chemical, and biological changes that the earth has undergone or is undergoing.

我尝试着（大概齐）翻译这段话：这门科学是有关研究地球实物历史，地球的岩石it is made up? 和物理层面，化学层面与生物层面的变化（就地球经受过或正在经受的变化。）
我翻译这段话是为了引出来我翻不出来的那一句：the rocks of which it is made up, 即it is made up.这里的it指的是什么？ be made up是什么意思，由于确定不了it的代表的意思，be made up 也不敢下定义乱翻，好像是被动语态。这里脑子好乱。如果再说的细一点就是关于of which = whose的受格有点转不过弯来。
比如，语法书上面讲的：
They live in an old house, whose roof may collapse anytime.
= They live in an old house, the roof of which may collapse anytime.
= They live in an old house, of which the roof may collapse anytime.
这三个例句我很容易看懂，也许是作为主语的关系，而定义中的关系代词部分可能是因为做宾语导致我脑子有点乱，望老师指点，谢谢好题老师

谢谢网友的信任和邀答。首先你要明白英语的一个句型:A is made up of B. 即A由B组成。up有时可以省略。 the rocks of which it is made up = the rocks which it is made up of. 显然，这里是个定语从句，先行词为rocks, which作made up of的宾语，本句中of前置，变为了of which, which 变为了of的宾语，it指the earth. it is made up of 看作系表结构。中文意思是：组成地球的岩石。我再给你提供一个结构相似的外刊例句：

你如果把the earth 换成it指代，就和你提供的句子中的那部分结构一样了。我想现在你应该明白了吧？
