上面的文段摘自2022年高考英语全国甲卷（全国卷Ⅱ）的完形填空。请问这里为什么用 a first step，而不用 the first step？

用不定冠词，表示不是强调先后的排列，所以这里的a first step相当于a beginning。当然这里如果用the 也可以。但暗示还会有第二步要做什么。请看薄冰《高级英语语法》p 108-9的解释：
