customary 是“常见的”，“通常的”的意思。这是比较从句的用法，句子相当于：Many of the animals... had more body fat than (it) is customary for animals arriving from the wild (to have much body fat).

如果去掉is customary for 也可以，但意思就和原来不太一样了。
