majority该连用复数动词还是单数动词（主谓一致）

新概念英语第4册46课，原文：

Of these the former are the majority.

我认为这句话的正常语序应该是：

The former of these are the majority.

为了强调，故意把 of these 放在句首。

我的问题是：为何谓语用 are，而不是 is?

The former is the majority.

这个道理很简单，these 说明他们是可数的，而且不止一个。majority 指多数，当然不是一个。所以要用复数are。
