改为主动句则为：

In this chapter the author presents additional combining forms to use in making words with suffixes.

在这个主动句中to use in making words with suffixes这个不定式为目的状语，及物动词to use的宾语缺失，形成空位，而语义上to use的宾语就是句子的宾语additional combining forms。这种现象，剑桥英语语法称为悬空不定式作目的状语。（即作目的状语的不定式的逻辑宾语为句子的宾语，则不定式的宾语省略，形成悬空不定式（反射不定式）。（不定式作目的状语的可以是悬空不定式，也可以是普通不定式。）当然，可能也会有人把这个不定式分析为表示动宾关系的定语。

剑桥英语语法悬空不定式作目的状语的例句如下：（p 1251)

I bought them to give to the children.

这个例句中的不定式显然不能解释为定语，只能分析为目的状语。句子如果改为被动语态则为：They were bought to give to the children. 这就和网友的句子结构相同了。

如果网友的句子中把to use 改为to be used. 则可以直接分析为被动不定式作目的状语；也可以分析为被动不定式作主语的（分隔式）定语。
