表示“继续”、“持续”的意思时：

（1）如果后接一段时间时，用last 或者continue 都可以，前者可以接或者不接for；后者通常接 for，如：

  The war lasted (for) five years. 战争持续了5年。 （《薄冰英语惯用法词典》p.471）

  The trial is expected to continue for three months. 预计审批要持续三个月。(《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》

（2）在 continue to do sth. / continue doing sth. / continue sth. 这种搭配中，continue 不能改为last 。如：

The rain continued to fall all afternoon. 这场雨整整一下午都下个不停。 (《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》第9版p.457)

He picked up his book and continued reading. 他拿起书，继续看下去。（《朗文当代高级英语辞典》第6版continue）
