would rather/sooner...than...的意思是“宁愿……而不愿……”，其中的 than 也可以视为比较结构，即也可以理解为“与……相比较，更愿意……”。

Kids would rather play than study. 小孩子宁愿玩而不愿学习。（或：与学习相比，孩子们更愿玩。）

I'd rather drive than go by train. 我宁愿开车去而不愿坐火车。（或：与坐火车去相比，我更愿意开车去。）
