请问老师，这里的what指代什么？what通常可以指代the thing(s) which，所以这里的what指代 the place which吗？这里thing可以灵活指代，那么这个灵活的原则是根据句意吗？比如这里的新几内亚是一个地点，which在定语中做主语，所以主语也是一个地方，那么先行词就用place，请问我这些分析对吗？

你的分析基本正确。what为融合型关系代词，引导名词性关系分句。what在此等于the place which. what从句相当于一个名词词组后接限制性定语从句，what隐包含了先行词和关系代词于一身。本句中现在是巴布亚新几内亚的那个地方是特指的，所以what=the place which.

你说的都对。包括你的 the thing(s) which

只是把what后的the place which改为 a place which (因为当时并非是the, 而应该是a)

what is XYZ 与 sth that is XYZ

略有区别，

前者类似中文的“所谓的”--- 也就是有点“非确定指”

后者对这个sth毕竟有所知道。

He went to what was called ABC.

He went to a village called ABC.

单独看，下面一句至少出现了一个“village”
