ahead是纯副词，而ahead+of→ahead of就是介词了。

这是词汇中的一种特殊情况吧？(我以前也碰到过其他单词是这种情况，只是暂时想不起来哪个词了。)

这就是所谓的复合介词。根据介词的呈现形式，它可分为简单介词（只有一个单词）和复合介词（由两个或两个以上单词构成）。你说的由“副词+介词”构成的复合介词，只是复合介词多种构成形式中的一种。这种情况比较常见的有 along with, away from, up to, out of, instead of, apart from 等。

更多复合介词举例：according to, as for, as to, because of, but for, due to, except for, further to, next to, on to, out of, owing to, regardless of, as well as, by means of, by way of, in addition to, in advance of, in case of, in charge of, in face of, in favour of, in front of, in need of, in spite of, in support of, in view of, on account of, on behalf of, on top of, with/in reference to, with regard of, for the sake of, with a view to 等等。
