句子语序

Mr. Gates told the BBC that a vaccine was the only way to get back to life, the way it was before the pandemic.

为什么不直接写成the only way to get back to life before the pandemic呢？逗号后面的句子不太理解，读着有点奇怪。

the way it was before the pandemic是解释说明前面get back to life中的life

不是指the only way中的way
