怎样理解cant表示能力与可能时的歧义

至少我目前理解can't有歧义。

比如：

man1：How did he get killed？

man2：I can't tell you why.

我认为 I can't tell you why 有两种理解。

一种是：我无法告诉你原因。（即我也不知道，表示能力上不行）

另一种：我不能告诉你原因。（即我知道原因，但是迫于其他形式外力，我不能告诉你真相，否则我自身难保之类的意思）

问题就出在这里：究竟该怎么理解这个can't 呢？要知道，如果我是 man1 的话，我很在乎man2 是否到底知道原因的。谢谢解答。

比如，若是表示“我无法告诉你原因”（即我也不知道，表示能力上不行），则可补上：As a matter of fact, I didn’t even hear about it. 即：

man1：Why did he get killed？

man2：I can't tell you why. As a matter of fact, I didn’t even hear about it.

若是表示“我不能告诉你原因”（即我知道原因，但是迫于其他形式外力，我不能告诉你真相，否则我自身难保之类的意思），则可补上：Because I've promised that I won’t tell anyone anything about it. 即：

man1：Why did he get killed？

man2：I can't tell you why, because I've promised that I won’t tell anyone anything about it.
