关于spend用法

I'm going to spend a whole afternoon to give it the attention it deserves.

阅读的时候看到了这一句子，我们常见的说法应该是spend time (in) doing sth. ，这里用了to do，请教一下各位师友，这样是可以的嘛

根据科林斯惯用法词典的解释，正确的用法是spend time doing sth. in doing, on doing 及to do都不符合惯用。

Be Careful!
Don't say that someone spends a period of time 'in doing', 'on doing', or 'to do' something.

Don't say, for example, 'We spent the evening in talking about art'.
