不理解两本英语词典中对attempt的解释

▲剑桥高级英语词典中attempt条：

attempt: when you try to do something, especially something difficult

例句：He made no attempt to be sociable. 他不合群，也不想改变。

对照牛津词典：

attempt: act of attempting sth

▲请问老师这里 when you try to do something 和 act of attempting sth 是怎么相等的呢？

when这里怎么翻译，对应词典中那一条的解释？

而且词典中解释某个词大部分是同义的替换，名词对应该名词。

如果不是在词典中，而只看单纯看这句话 when you try to do something, 当你试图做某事的时候，我们能等出attempt来吗？

我想这只是不同词典因体例不同所采用的不同风格而已：

1.《牛津词典》用 act of attempting sth 来解释 attempt，是典型的词典释义法，准确且精炼。

2.《剑桥词典》用when you try to do something, especially something difficult来解释attempt，是一种比较口语化的方法，虽然用词较多，但浅显易懂（现在不少用法词典都倾向于用这种方式解释）。

1.《柯林斯词典》对attempt 的解释：If you make an attempt to do something, you try to do it, often without success.

2.《朗文词典》对attempt 的解释：an act of trying to do something, especially something difficult

3.《麦克米兰词典》对attempt 的解释：an effort to do something

比较而言：我觉得《朗文》《麦克米兰》《剑桥》的释义对初学者比较受用，因为解释的文字比较浅显易懂；而《牛津》和《柯林斯》则在解释attempt的意思时用了attempt，由于attempt在此为被解释的生词，在其释义仍用attempt一词，显然会给学习者带来困难。
