如何选择用名词还是动名词(study / studying等)

这是高中英语新教材译林版必修1第1单元的一个句子(p1)，是根据孔子的“学而不思则罔，思不学则殆”翻译而来的。

请问专家：为什么翻译中的句子 study 用名词形式，而 thinking 却用动名词形式呢？下面的翻译对吗？

我觉得你的改写也是可以的，即可以同时都用动名词或名词。以名词 study 和动名词 studying 为例，一般说来，名词形式的 study 强调笼统意义或抽象意义，而动名词则强调临时意义或动作意义。比较：

Studying for exams stresses me out. 复习迎考使我非常焦虑。（临时性）

Study has an intrinsic worth, as well as helping you achieve your goals. 学习不仅帮助你实现目标，而且还有内在的价值。（抽象性）

但以上区分并不绝对，事实上，studying 也常常可以名词化，表示抽象意义。如：

Studying is the gateway to success. 学习是通往成功的人口。（韦氏）

Studying stretched my mind and got me thinking about things. 学习扩展了我的才智，使我开始思考事情了。（柯林斯）

因为study本身即可以做动词也可以做名词呀!

the activity of learning or gaining knowledge, either from books or by examining things in the world学习；研究

而think只能做动词，这里只能用动名词，这是词性不同导致的。
